| Jobs Lost As Workers Reject 50% Pay Cut |
| QK Meats in Kildare has informed its workers it is to cease production tomorrow with the loss of 90 jobs. Staff at the food production plant rejected a 50% paycut from the company shortly before today's announcement. The union SIPTU, which was negotiating on behalf of the workers said the company had refused all reasonable attempts by union to engage in negotiations over pay and conditions of employment. Branch organiser Adrian Kane said last night that the company also refused to implement a Labour Court recommendation which provided for basic pension and sick pay cover and overtime rates in line with industry norms. "Unfortunately the company was more interested in devoting large amounts of money and energy to legal battles than responding to the very genuine grievances of its largely Brazilian workforce,” he said. Mr Kane added that SIPTU wrote to the company in light of the information it has received from its members but the company refused to respond. “There are rumours in the locality and the meat industry that the company may start up operations in the months ahead, but it is not possible to substantiate these rumours at the present time," the branch manager added.
